Giving That Builds Faith—And Makes Financial Sense
As the year draws to a close, many of our Catholic Noles friends and supporters are looking for meaningful ways to give back while being mindful of their financial planning. One increasingly popular option—especially for those in or approaching retirement—is the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD): a simple and tax-smart way to support the ministry you love.
If you are, or know someone who is, 70½ or older and passionate about Catholic Noles, a QCD allows you to make a direct transfer from an IRA to a qualified nonprofit, such as the Catholic Student Union. This type of gift counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) but is excluded from taxable income—making it a smart way to give while maximizing impact.

In 2025, individuals can contribute up to $108,000, and married couples up to $216,000, through QCDs. To qualify, the gift must be made directly from your IRA to Catholic Student Union. By giving through your IRA, you help ensure that students in higher education have access to a welcoming spiritual home during their college years.

A few important details to keep in mind:
-
It’s best to initiate QCDs early in the year to ensure they are processed in time to count toward your RMD. All QCDs must be received by December 31, 2025.
-
Beginning in 2025, the IRS requires QCDs to be reported on Form 1099-R using Code Y.
-
Always consult your financial or tax advisor to confirm that a QCD is right for you and that your gift is structured and reported correctly.

Your support helps make it possible for students to encounter Christ through retreats, service, and community—strengthening their faith and forming Christ-centered leaders for the Church and the world.
